Christoph Flamm studied musicology, art history and German language and literature at the University of Heidelberg, where he was awarded a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Herbert Schneider for his thesis on the Russian composer Nikolai Medtner. With a DAAD scholarship, he spent a semester studying in Moscow. From 1994 to 2001, he worked as a research editor for the encyclopaedia “Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart” at Bärenreiter-Verlag in Kassel. From 2001 to 2004, he conducted research in the Department of Music History at the German Historical Institute in Rome (DHI), focusing on Italian instrumental music of the early 20th century, using Ottorino Respighi as a case study. During this time, he also took on teaching assignments at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. He was able to complete the postdoctoral thesis he had begun in Rome thanks to a two-year DFG grant in 2007 and subsequently taught at Saarland University as a private lecturer. In the 2011/12 academic year, a visiting professorship took him to the Berlin University of the Arts. After a brief period working on the new Reger edition in Karlsruhe, he accepted an appointment as Professor of Applied Musicology at the Alpen-Adria-Universität in Klagenfurt in 2013. From 2014 to 2020, Christoph Flamm was Professor of Musicology at the University of Music Lübeck, where he also served as Vice-President for Research and International Affairs. In the winter semester of 2019/20, he had already taken up a teaching post at the University of Heidelberg, to which he moved in March 2020.
Christoph Flamm is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the DHI Rome, a member of the Editorial Board and Academic Advisory Board of ‘MGG Online’, spokesperson for the Advisory Board of the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung, and a member of the Academia Europaea. He is one of the designated contact persons for cases of abuse of power within the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung and Deputy Equal Opportunities Officer at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg.
His research interests focus on the music of Central and Eastern Europe, modern Italian and French music, and instrumental music in general from the 18th century onwards. The position of music in political contexts, the ideological dimensions of music historiography, interdisciplinary issues, and the relationships and interactions between music and other arts are further areas of interest. Furthermore, the critical edition of musical works represents an important area of his work.
