Vita
After completing his studies (musicology, cultural management, art history) at the HfM Weimar and the FSU Jena, Stefan Menzel undertook research from 2006 to 2010 as a research student and research fellow at the University of Tokyo and Meiji Gakuin University Tokyo. After working as a research associate at the Institute for Musicology Weimar-Jena, he was awarded a PhD in 2015 with a thesis on the history of Japanese music in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 2016, he secured funding for the DFG project ‘Die Bedeutung der protestantischen Fürstenschulen für die mitteldeutsche Figuralmusikpflege des 16. Jahrhunderts’. From 2020 to 2021, Menzel held visiting professorships at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg. In 2021, he completed his habilitation at the Faculty of Philosophy at Heidelberg University. Since 2022, he has been a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Musicology there and was promoted in 2024 as Academic Manager of the Department of Musicology.
His research focuses on the music history of the German-speaking world in the 16th and 17th centuries, the history of Japanese music in the 19th and 20th centuries, music and the Reformation/Humanism/Liturgy/Theology, music and intangible cultural heritage, as well as the history of musical institutions and discourse.
